Identity TheftAt Reporting-Ethics, we want to do our best and cover the very serious crime of identity theft. Where according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), there was an estimated 9 million new victims last year. Of these the United States Secret Services investigates a total of 25 types of financial identity fraud crimes. Making it the fastest growing crime in the United States. The FTC defines this crime as involving the fraudulent use of another persons private information, such as their Social Security number, driver's license number or a credit card number to obtain credit, merchandise and/or service in the victims name. The information can then be used to take over existing accounts and/or open new accounts. Leaving the victim with a ruined credit history. The damage caused to the person whose identification were stolen can have both a financial and emotional impact. The victim may spend months or even years repairing the mess. In the process, the victims may be hurt financially losing job opportunities, being refused loans, education, housing or even getting arrested for crimes that they did not commit. On the emotional side, the frustration, anger and fears are all unavoidable. This is for something the Identity Theft Research Center concludes because of the nature of the crime, the criminal may never be found, let alone arrested or convicted. In the right hand column there are recent articles posted there concerning the ID Theft news topics. By my audiences reading up on them, they would be able to learn from others successes and failures. Hopefully then being able to apply what they learned to their own financial lives.
